Aim

To qualify candidates for independent design of complex hydraulic structures.

Outcome

Understanding and solving practical complex problems in the hydraulics of hydraulic structures.

Contents

Hydraulic structures for excess water control (EC, spillways and appurtenant structures): the role and characteristics. General layouts of EC. Overflow dams with and without a gates, hydraulic design, the discharge coefficient, chute: self aeration, cavitation and aeration. Stilling basins and energy dissipaters. Chute spillway. Side spillway. Shaft spillway. Stepped spillway. Emergency spillway. Other types of spillways. Analysis of pressure pulsations in the stilling basins. Outlet and intake structures: types, layout and design. The most common mistakes in design and construction. Other types of hydraulic structures.
