We invite you to visit the presentation of our Department!

The Department is responsible for teaching, scientific research and provides consulting services in the field of hydraulic and environmental engineering. The primary activities of hydraulic and environmental engineering include design, construction and maintenance of water resources systems and facilities, as well as assessment of their impact on the environment. The following areas are being studied at the Department:

•       public and industrial water supply (water sources, raw water pipelines, potable water treatment plants and distribution networks)

•       river training (riverbed stabilization, flood protection, waterways and ports)

•    hydropower (design of impoundment and derivation hydropower facilities, surge tanks, tunnels and pipelines)

•       hydraulic structures (dams with discharge facilities, diversion tunnels, intakes, reservoirs, etc.)

•       irrigation and drainage (design of pumping stations, irrigation systems, drainage systems, channels, etc.)

•     water treatment and water quality protection (wastewater treatment, pollution control, municipal and industrial sewer networks)

•     engineering and physical limnology (measurement and modeling of seasonal changes of water quality indicators and trophic states of lakes and artificial reservoirs)

•      measurement, modeling and treatment of stormwater runoff (estimate of spatial and temporal distribution of quantity and quality of stormwater runoff from urban catchments, design of measures for increase of the time of concentration and biofilters for micropollutant removal)

•      hydraulic measurements (measurement of hydraulic and hydrological parameters in laboratory and site conditions)

•     environmental engineering (environmental impact assessment of hydraulic works and facilities, remediation of landfills, tailing ponds, lakes, etc.)

•     hydroinformatics and optimization of water management systems (design of hydroinformatics databases and models for optimal management of large water resource systems and distribution networks)

Theoretical modules constitute the basis for the above professional fields, such as fluid mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology, that are taught by the teachers from the Department. Presently, the teaching staff includes 30 teachers and associates: 5 full professors, 3 associate professors, 11 assistant professors and 11 assistants.

In addition to the teaching, members of the Department are engaged in scientific research projects financed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, as well as in projects funded by international funds. Members of the Department are also involved in implementation of professional studies and provide consultancy services in commercial projects through the Institute of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering hosts four laboratories that are used for teaching, research and commercial projects:

•   Laboratory for Sanitary Engineering

•   Laboratory for Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Flow Measurement

•   Laboratory for Hydraulics and Waterway Regulation

•   Laboratory for Hydrometry and Hydrology

Since year 2012, the UNESCO Chair in Water for Ecologically Sustainable Development was affiliated to the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, aiming at improvement of education and multidisciplinary research projects in the field of water resources that have been achieved through cooperation with neighboring countries, the countries of Central Asia and the former states of the USSR. Cooperation with the University of Azerbaijan and the Kazakh National Technical University has already reached the operational level in the fields of students exchange and preparation of joint projects.

The Department manages the International Research and Тraining Cеnter for Urban Drainage – IRTCUD, under UNESCO auspices, with its headquarters at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade.

International E-learning Postgraduate Programme in Water Resources and Environmental Management – EDUCATE (http://www.water-msc.org/)  has been implemented together with our partners from the Region – National Technical University of Athens, University of Ljubljana and Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest. The study lasts two years and are based on e-learning concept. EDUCATE started in year 2007, as a part of INTEREG III B CADSES project, and continues to be successfully implemented up to date.

The Department has a successful long-term cooperation with several distinguished university centers abroad: Imperial College London, Universities from Hamburg, Kyoto, Aberdeen, Exeter, Melbourne, Hokkaido, Calgary, Consenza, etc.

The Department has established successful collaboration with national and international professional associations in activities related to organization of national and international conferences and in implementation of continuous learning courses for professional engineers in practice.
