Department for construction of roads and railways was founded in 1888. This is considered as the beginning of today’s Department for roads, airports and railways. During 125 years of its existence, Department was main teaching, scientific and professional unit in the area of planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads, railways and airports. Many teachers from this Department were leading researchers and the most prominent professionals in mentioned areas.

Teachers from Department for roads, airports and railways hold lectures on bachelor studies that deal with different aspects of planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads and railways, and one special subject is dedicated to the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) in engineering. Also, they hold lectures on master studies about planning, design, construction and maintenance of airports, train stations and city road system, environmental protection, and design methodology.

Among mentioned, the department teachers hold lectures on other faculties that belong to the University of Belgrade, and also on faculties from University of Montenegro and University of Banja Luka.

Doctoral studies on the Department cover advanced topics of: rheology of bitumen and asphalt mixtures, geometrical road design, pavement design, railway track structure, road maintenance management systems, railways, and public private partnership in transport infrastructure.

Among holding lectures, members of the Department are engaged in scientific-research projects supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, international bilateral projects, and projects that are conducted in the cooperation with commercial entities.

Nowadays, the Department staff consists of one professor,  two associate professors, one assistant professor and six teaching assistants.
